Honing starts after the bore exists. Provide incoming geometry, allowance, material, bore type, depth, target tolerance, surface texture and inspection method before selecting the machine and tool strategy.

When to Review Deep Hole Honing

Deep hole honing is considered when a pre-machined bore requires controlled sizing, geometry correction or surface finishing.

  • Defined diameter, geometry or surface requirements
  • Workpieces that can be supported and flushed through the honing zone

Review preparation or another process when

  • The hole has not yet been created
  • Large or highly variable stock remains
  • Severe bend or position error requires earlier correction
  • Blind, stepped or interrupted geometry needs special tooling

The starting bore ranges differ. Machine length alone does not select the configuration. Final values depend on incoming geometry, allowance, material, tool, coolant, stroke and inspection method.

2. Confirm allowance

Nominal stock and variation over depth.

3. Select the strategy

Tool, stone, expansion, stroke, rotation, coolant and filtration.

Locations, instruments, texture, sample and limits.

How much allowance is needed for honing?

It depends on incoming error, material, bore size, depth, tool and target. Provide measurements along the bore, not one nominal diameter.

Can honing correct straightness?

Honing can influence geometry within a process-specific boundary, but does not automatically correct all position or severe bend errors.

Can the machine hone blind or stepped bores?

These geometries require tool, overrun and abrasive-flow review. Show the full section in the drawing.

Do the order records prove customer acceptance?

No. Separate inspection, logistics, installation and signed acceptance evidence is required.
