Is Deep Hole Drilling the Right Starting Route?

Deep hole drilling is normally reviewed when a long bore must be created from solid material or an agreed starting condition. Gun drilling and BTA use different tool, coolant and chip-evacuation arrangements.

Good starting fit

  • Long bores from solid material
  • Controlled entry and tool guidance
  • Workpieces that can be supported with the required coolant route
  • Repeat production where process stability matters

Review another or combined route when

  • The hole already exists and only final correction is required
  • Stock removal is better handled by boring
  • Blind, stepped, interrupted or cross-hole geometry changes chip evacuation
  • Rigidity or coolant access cannot support the proposed method

Gun Drilling or BTA? Start with the Bore

Gun drilling is commonly evaluated for relatively small-diameter long bores with external chip evacuation. BTA is evaluated for suitable larger-bore applications using an internal chip-removal route. The changeover point is not determined by diameter alone.

Material, depth, output, coolant supply, tool interface and machine layout all affect the process choice.

Does gun drilling suit every long hole?

No. Diameter, material, entry condition, depth, interruption and chip evacuation must be reviewed.

Are the published accuracy values guaranteed?

No. They are selection references until confirmed in signed project documents with the measurement method.
